2009 the global recession started hence it effected businesses worldwide. 2010 recovery has begun; however still slow and now with the additional problem of Euro depreciating to a new low; there are serious concerns in the market. How this effects the RFID space is yet to be seen.
There have to be more competitors to NXP who are less costly yet have similar IC’s - companies like EM, TI, ATMEL have very small market share and have failed to offer serious competition to NXP. Customers who have installed their systems using NXP ot TI in some cases are stuck with them as cost of shifting to other IC manufacturer’s is extremely high.
UHF has definitely got the price down of the IC, however the problem with UHF is that it is not applicable for all types of applications. Each frequency has its own advantage and disadvantages, and there is no one frequency that can do justice to all types of applications. Every year we think - this is the year RFID will finally kick off to new heights – not yeat happened in the past few years.
There is huge potential for RFID as there are a lot of new areas it can be applied to; I personally feel almost any application involving supply chain management can adopt this technology. System integrators play a very important role and they are the ones who can think and research new applications as they have access to the end-user. They need to work closely with Tag/Reader manufacturers and help bring down the cost of the complete solution.
„RFID is a technology that hasn’t yet lived up to its reputation“
