In certain applications it is desirable that transponders with integrated temperature sensor can work supplied by the UHF-field only and a battery is not required. Under such conditions no maintenance will be necessary and the temperature range is not limited by the environmental limitations of the battery.
For example temperature measurements up to 120 degrees can be realized in such cases. We have investigated the behavior of our PE3001 under such conditions and the results have been compiled in an application note. As one can expect the performance of the transponder is very much dependent on the design of the antenna connected with the chip and the performance of the reader. With our PE3001 UHF-transponder we could achieve battery-less temperature sensing up to one to two metre reading distance depending on the used configuration.
