GS1 Germany at a glance

GS1 Germany supports companies from all sectors in the adoption and practical implementation of modern communication and process standards, in order to improve the efficiency of their business processes. Within Germany, the company is responsible for the maintenance and continued development of the GS1 article numbering system for globally unique identification, which in turn serves as the basis for bar codes. Moreover, GS1 Germany supports the application of new technologies for fully automatic object identification (EPC/RFID) and offers customer-orientated solutions (ECR - Efficient Consumer Response).

Based in Cologne, the private sector company belongs to the international network ”Global Standards One“ (GS1) as the second largest of more than 100 national GS1 organisations worldwide. The German Markenverband and the EHI Retail Institute hold equal shares in GS1 Germany.

At the same time, GS1 Germany represents EPCglobal at national level. EPCglobal is a non-profit organisation tasked by GS1 with the development of global, inter-industry standards for radio frequency identification (RFID) applications along the entire supply chain. Built on established GS1 standards, the EPC (Electronic Product Code) serves as the cornerstone for RFIDbased identification of objects.

Furthermore, EPCglobal standardises interfaces for the dynamic capture and query of data within a company’s own four walls as well as at cooperating trading partner locations. The basic concept of the so-called EPC Information Services (EPCIS) is the internet-based provision of product information along the entire value chain in real time, at all times. EPCIS is based on research and development work initiated by the AutoID Center of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

GS1 Germany ist darüber hinaus die deutsche Vertretung von EPCglobal. Die Non-Profit-Organisation EPCglobal entwickelt Standards für die einheitliche Nutzung der Radiofrequenztechnologie für Identifikationszwecke (RFID) entlang der gesamten Versorgungskette über Länder- und Branchengrenzen hinweg. Der EPC (Elektronischer Produkt-Code) dient der Radiofrequenz-basierten Identifikation von Objekten und baut auf den bewährten GS1-Standards auf.

EPCglobal standardisiert weiterhin Schnittstellen, um intern und unternehmensübergreifend Daten zu erfassen und dynamisch abzufragen. Grundidee der sogenannten EPC Information Services (EPCIS) ist es, Produktinformationen entlang der Wertschöpfungskette über das Internet jederzeit - in Echtzeit - verfügbar zu machen. Das EPCIS-Konzept basiert auf Forschungsund Entwicklungsarbeiten, die vom AutoID Center des Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) initiiert wurden.
